Ingredients:
For the Doughnuts:
- 1 cup whole milk, warmed to about 110°F (43°C)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
For the Glaze:
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Frying:
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions:
For the Doughnuts:
- Activate the Yeast:
- In a bowl, combine warm milk, active dry yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Mix Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine sifted flour, salt, and ground nutmeg. Add softened butter, activated yeast mixture, and eggs. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead Dough:
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-8 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- First Rise:
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size.
- Roll and Cut Doughnuts:
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness. Cut out doughnuts using a doughnut cutter or two differently sized round cutters.
- Second Rise:
- Place the cut doughnuts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover them with a cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Fry Doughnuts:
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large, heavy pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the doughnuts in batches until they are golden brown on both sides. This usually takes about 1-2 minutes per side.
- Drain Excess Oil:
- Remove the fried doughnuts and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
For the Glaze:
- Make Glaze:
- In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Glaze Doughnuts:
- While the doughnuts are still warm, dip them into the glaze, coating both sides evenly. Place them on a wire rack to allow any excess glaze to drip off.
- Let Glaze Set:
- Allow the glaze to set for a few minutes before serving.
- Enjoy:
- Enjoy your homemade Krispy Kreme Glazed Doughnuts!
These homemade glazed doughnuts are best served fresh and warm. You can enjoy them as they are or get creative by adding toppings like sprinkles, shredded coconut, or crushed nuts while the glaze is still wet.
