Ingredients:
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup dry white wine (optional)
- 8 cups beef broth
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Baguette slices, toasted
- Gruyere or Swiss cheese, shredded
Instructions:
- Caramelize the Onions:
- In a large pot or Dutch oven, melt the butter with olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and golden brown. This process can take around 30-40 minutes.
- Add Sugar and Garlic:
- Sprinkle sugar over the caramelized onions and stir to help with the caramelization.
- Add minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
- Deglaze with Wine (Optional):
- Pour in the white wine to deglaze the pot, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom.
- Add Broth and Seasonings:
