Ingredients:
For the Gingerbread Dough:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon ground ginger
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Icing:
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1-2 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Food coloring (optional)
Instructions:
Make the Gingerbread Dough:
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Combine Dry Ingredients:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Set aside.
- Cream Butter and Sugar:
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add Egg and Molasses:
- Add the egg, molasses, and vanilla extract to the creamed butter and sugar. Mix until well combined.
- Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until the dough comes together. If the dough is too sticky, you can add a bit more flour.
- Chill the Dough:
- Divide the dough into two equal portions, flatten each into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Roll and Cut Out Cookies:
- Preheat the Oven Again:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) if it’s not already.
- Roll Out Dough:
- On a floured surface, roll out one portion of the chilled dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Cut Out Shapes:
- Use gingerbread cookie cutters to cut out shapes from the rolled-out dough. Place the cut-out cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are set. The baking time may vary depending on the size of your cookies.
- Cool:
- Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Repeat:
- Repeat the rolling, cutting, and baking process with the remaining portion of the dough.
Make the Icing:
- Prepare Icing:
- In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. If you want to color the icing, add food coloring until you reach the desired shade.
- Decorate:
- Use the icing to decorate the cooled gingerbread cookies. You can pipe on designs, outline the edges, or flood the cookies with icing.
- Let Icing Set:
- Allow the icing to set before storing or serving the gingerbread cookies.
Enjoy these festive and flavorful gingerbread cookies!
