Mumbo Sauce
On December 10, 2023 by userMumbo sauce is a sweet and tangy condiment that originated in Washington, D.C. It’s often used as a dipping sauce for fried foods, such as chicken wings. Here’s a simple recipe for making your own Mumbo sauce:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon hot sauce (adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for extra heat)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Instructions:
- In a medium saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
- Add the garlic powder and onion powder to the oil and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
- Reduce the heat to low and add the ketchup, honey, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, hot sauce, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), ground ginger, and brown sugar to the saucepan. Stir well to combine.
- Simmer the sauce over low heat for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. This helps the flavors meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
- Taste the sauce and adjust the sweetness or spiciness according to your preference by adding more honey or hot sauce.
- Once the sauce has thickened to your liking, remove it from heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
- Transfer the Mumbo sauce to a jar or container for storage.
- Allow the sauce to cool completely before using. It can be refrigerated for later use.
