Manhattan Cocktail
On December 22, 2023 by userThe Manhattan is a classic cocktail that dates back to the late 19th century. It’s a straightforward and elegant drink that highlights the flavors of whiskey. Here’s a basic recipe for a classic Manhattan:
Ingredients:
- 2 oz (60 ml) rye whiskey or bourbon
- 1 oz (30 ml) sweet vermouth
- 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
- Maraschino cherry for garnish
- Orange peel twist for garnish
Instructions:
- Fill a mixing glass with ice.
- Add the rye whiskey or bourbon, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters to the mixing glass.
- Stir the ingredients well with a bar spoon for about 30 seconds. This helps chill and dilute the mixture.
- Strain the mixture into a chilled martini or rocks glass.
- Garnish with a maraschino cherry and a twist of orange peel. To release the citrus oils, express the peel over the drink by giving it a twist, then drop it into the glass.
- Some variations suggest shaking the ingredients with ice instead of stirring. However, the traditional method is to stir to maintain a smoother texture.
- Enjoy your classic Manhattan responsibly!
Note: You can adjust the ratios to suit your taste preferences. Some people prefer a drier Manhattan with less sweet vermouth, while others like it a bit sweeter. Experiment with the proportions to find the balance you like best.
